Over the past few years, one laptop model has stood out from the rest – the slim, lightweight, powerful, and feature-packed Xps line of laptops made by Microsoft.

The base model is the Xps 15 with an i7 processor and 16 GB RAM for around $600. It features a beautiful Infinity Edge Display, backlit keyboards, and solid battery life.

These are some pretty impressive specs for the price! And while it’s not too difficult to find a preloaded version of windows installed onto the computer, most people don’t actually use the operating system itself.

Windows is still mostly used as a software platform that other applications can work in, so why not take advantage of that and make it useful? By adding apps to it, you give your user more value.

And since this article will be looking at best apps for windows, this is definitely something worth considering.

The processor of Dell XPS 13

When it comes down to it, you really can’t go wrong with any of these laptops. They are all pretty powerful, so pick one that fits your needs best.

All three have an 8th Generation Intel Core i5 or i7 processor which will give you solid performance when working directly with apps and software. An even better option may be the starting price!

The 128 GB SSD is just as fast if not faster than many internal hard drives which cost more. This is great for people who like to use their computer heavily and store lots of files and applications.

And lastly, the 1 TB PCIe NVMe M.2 storage slot is top-of-the-line speed which allows for very quick boot up times and lightning fast data transfer speeds.

The storage

One of the biggest criticisms of the older model was that it only had 128GB of internal memory, which is not enough for most people. This can be remedied by either buying an external SD card slot or choosing between two different internal memory configurations.

The base model comes with 8GB RAM and 256GB SSD, but you can also choose 6GB RAM and 512GB SSD, or even 4GB RAM and 1TB HDD! All three of these variations cost around $400 more than the standard configuration.

We recommend picking up the one with at least 6GB of RAM to make multitasking much easier. There are several sites that test computer speed and this one gave us the fastest performance when opening multiple windows and apps. It also has 2x faster graphics than the previous generation so image editing will run smoothly.

The battery

One of the biggest criticisms of past model year XPS laptops was their relatively small, non-removable batteries. These models would often get stuck when you needed to take a break or run out of power during use.

Not anymore! This year’s iteration features an 85WHr battery that is both bigger and more capable than before. It also gets upgraded automatically via software in later years.

The company claims up to 10 hours of web browsing using only 250MB of RAM, which is quite impressive for such a powerful device. For those times when you do need extra juice, there are two ports located at the front as well as one at the back.

These include USB-C, HDMI, DisplayPort, and legacy Thunderbolt 3 (USB 2.0) connections. If you want even longer life, you can purchase the $199 Advanced Experience Package, which includes 16GB of RAM and 1TB SSD storage. Both of these upgrades will cost you additional money though, so be sure to check out our pros and cons list first.

The design

When you look at the XPS 13 now, it’s hard to believe that this sleek laptop only came out in 2017! It has such a distinctive style that is instantly recognizable as an XPS product.

The rounded corners are crisp and clean, with very little decoration or extra flair. This creates a minimalist feel, which can be attractive if you want to focus on functionality over appearance.

However, don’t get too focused on empty space — there’s still enough room for all of your essentials including webcam, microphone, and power adapter.

There have been rumors about an updated version of the current model ever since it was first released, but thankfully those never come to fruition. At least not yet!

This article will talk more about the potential changes that could make the new version even better than the one before it. But first, let’start by taking a closer look at the current model.

The ports

One of the main criticisms of past generations of the thin-and-light laptops is that they do not have enough external connectivity options. While some brands still stick with USB, DisplayPort, and HDMI as their only standard port types, others are moving forward with adding new ones.

The latest mobile device platform to get this treatment is one that many people are already familiar with: Microsoft’s Surface line. Starting in 2015, we saw the debut of the Surface Book, which had two different sized screens (one being an 11-inch tablet) connected by means of a detachable keyboard.

This year, we got our first look at what will be the next iteration of the Surface book, called the Surface Pro 6. This new model drops the size difference between the 2 screen sizes, making it so you can use either the tablet or laptop form factors just like before!

However, one big change here is that instead of having a separate keyboard attachment, the Surface Pro 6 gets rid of its traditional trackpad and uses a touchscreen for input.

While there are definitely advantages to using a touch interface over a physical mouse pad, I think this move back towards more classic internal computer connections is a good thing. We lose trackpoint mice and dongles less often than ever, but the loss of external connectors could become limiting down the road.

The webcam

When you use the front facing camera, there are two settings that most users will not use. One is for capturing self-portraits, which is totally fine! But using it as an always-on web cam is something people tend to complain about.

If you want to do this, make sure you have “camera mode” set to either “front camera only” or “back camera only”. You can also disable the camera completely if you don’t mind having slightly reduced quality videos and pictures.

The other setting many users skip is “night mode”. This changes how dark the screen gets adjusted at night so it doesn’t hurt your eyes when using the device in bed or outdoors.

By default, the XPS uses a very bright display that isn’t too heavy on power usage. If you need more battery life, you can easily lower the brightness of the screen.

The software

When it comes down to it, no matter what model you pick or what features are important to you, your choice of laptop will be mostly influenced by the operating system (OS) that you use. There is an ever-growing selection of OS’s out there for laptops, so picking one really doesn’t make a difference most of the time!

That being said, we have chosen three different brands’ top models that contain their premium features along with some very cool software. They all run Microsoft Windows 10, which is totally free to install and update, making this recommendation neutral.

There is one major drawback though: All but one of these laptops feature Intel processors, which can sometimes limit overall performance due to limited power supply. That isn’t necessarily a bad thing since CPUs get expensive quickly, but it may not work for every user.

If speed is more important than having extra features, then you should look into either an AMD Ryzen processor or an ARM CPU instead.

Pros and cons

While most people will agree that having an OLED screen is pretty, some may not like how thin these screens are. Because they are so slim, it can be difficult to find where you could place your hands or get good reception of calls and messages.

Another thing many might not like about OLED technology is that it requires more powerful graphics cards in order to run at full performance. This can be annoying since high end laptops already have very strong GPUs, making it hard to find one with an OLED display.

However, we should note that even if you do purchase an OLED laptop later on, there are ways to use it properly.
